It’s widely expected that U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis will face a competitive primary in 2026 — and his first Republican challenger is about to announce a bid for the office.

Andy Nilsson, a long-time denizen of North Carolina politics, has filed paperwork with the FEC to launch his campaign committee for U.S. Senate. He’s planning a formal campaign launch later this month in Wake County.

Nilsson has a background in business, with a multi-decade career in manufacturing as a plant manager. He started his political involvement more than 30 years ago, serving as political director for former Charlotte mayor Richard Vinroot as he ran for governor. Nilsson was also a field director for former U.S. Sen. Richard Burr in his early campaigns for Congress.

Nilsson ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2000 and garnered about 40% of the state Republican Party vote in a bid for RNC Committeeman in 2023.

He’s working with consultant Charles Hellwig for the U.S. Senate race.
