This deserves General Assembly hearings ASAP

Charlotte's repeat offender problem makes it pretty clear that Iryna's Law doesn't go far enough

I’ve been writing a ton about crime in Charlotte recently. Most recently, I talked about why people don’t always trust the statistics, and for good reason. Sure, the official data says that violent crime is down — but then again, somebody firing shots across a public park doesn’t count as violent crime. You can read the article here.

I’m grateful that the General Assembly moved swiftly to pass Iryna’s Law, which cuts down on cashless bail and requires magistrates to slow down and think harder about who walks out scot-free. That should slow the revolving door, and that’s good.

But apparently that’s nowhere close to enough.

The good folks over at WSOC-TV have been keeping close tabs on people arrested recently and how quickly they get released and on what terms.
