The author forgets one factor in North Carolina politics that undercuts his argument. In post-2010 history, Republicans DO win, statewide elections. The highest vote-getter has regularly been the Republican Secretary of Agriculture, Steve Troxler. It is a rarity when Democrats win a statewide judicial election. Long ago, the majority simply quit trusting Democrat judges. In fact, that was the reason, back in the early 99’s, that the Democrat legislature took the partisan labels off judicial races, in the first place.
I see exactly two reasons NC cannot elect a solid Republican governor. The first is that Democrats control the process and this means exactly what it implies. Anybody who thinks Cooper won the 2016 election without cheating is clearly a fraud denier. The second reason Republicans keep losing the governor’s mansion, comes down to ideology. If you think back, the only Republican governor reelected since reconstruction was the conservative, Jim Martin. None of the liberal Republicans, who have otherwise won the nominations have been reelected.
Conservative Dan Forest lost due to the Covid distortion and Democrats controlling the electoral process. Conservative Mark Robinson, the great orator and incompetent administrator, lost due to a Dem/RINO collusion that bled him for money and then killed him at the last minute.
Bottom line: North Carolina is a red state with elections controlled by Democrats and RINOs.

What would the outcome look like if NC’s districts were not so profoundly gerrymandered?
