The case for Michael Whatley for governor
Whatley brings a different set of strengths — and in a race where Republicans face long odds, that alone makes him worth a look.
The chatter is starting to pick up: Michael Whatley for governor in 2028.
It’s still early, obviously. But North Carolina Republicans have a relatively weak bench right now, with no heir apparent for the gubernatorial nomination.
That makes Whatley — current chairman of the Republican National Committee and former state party chief — an intriguing option. He’s way different from traditional candidates for this office, which is both a strength and a liability.
It makes sense to game this out a bit, because if he decides to make a run, it would represent a significant strategic departure from how Republicans have approached the governor’s race in recent cycles.
