What is Longleaf Politics?
Smart conservative takes on North Carolina politics.
Longleaf Politics isn’t just another political newsletter. It’s a roadmap to a stronger state.
I’m Andrew Dunn, a journalist-turned-political strategist who lives in Charlotte. I use Longleaf Politics to weigh in on the big issues in North Carolina government and politics. I also work directly with candidates and political organizations seeking to make a difference in our state.
The goal is to help thoughtful conservatives win elections, influence policy, and lead with purpose. But I’m grateful that people on both sides of the aisle read and engage — and I’m not afraid to throw a few elbows in either direction.
Whether you’re running for office, advising a campaign, or simply passionate about the Old North State, Longleaf Politics is for you.

About the author
I grew up in Apex, started my career in Wilmington, and have called Charlotte home for the past 14 years. In that time, I spent a decade as a traditional journalist, reporting for The Charlotte Observer and serving as editor-in-chief of Charlotte Agenda.
In 2019, I traded covering campaigns for running one, serving as communications director for Dan Forest’s gubernatorial race. That experience changed my perspective and my role — moving from reporting the news to guiding it.
When I’m not writing, you can find me exploring North Carolina with my wife and four kids or making the case for the sweet potato as our state’s greatest export.
What are my politics?
I’m politically conservative and a registered Republican. But Longleaf Politics isn’t about rigid partisanship — it’s about solutions that work for North Carolina families.
I believe conservatism should be practical, solutions-driven, and rooted in respect for civil debate. I’m about good government and sane politics.
Let’s build something great.
Politics isn’t a game. It’s a force for good that can strengthen communities and improve lives for North Carolina families.
Join Longleaf Politics today, and let’s make it happen together.
