While I hate speaking ill of the dead… It’s sickening to see all of media glossing over Him Hunt’s cut-throat politics and pretending like he was the second coming of Jesus Christ.
His first nasty act of not what his, patronage scandal that involved his overtly selling access to anybody wanting to speak with him as governor. An infamous aide would sit outside Hunt’s office and collect the money before they could pass. When caught, the equally corrupt legislature “reformed” the process by making the aide move his office out of any government buildings.
Then there was the fact that he, as a power, hungry Lieutenant governor with lots and lots of tobacco money, engineered the state amendment on gubernatorial succession while sitting as President of the Senate. This, he became the first benefactor of that historic change to our constitution.
Then, low and behold! After serving for his full eight years, he was succeeded by the state’s only conservative Republican governor ever elected, Jim Martin. Then, thanks to a loophole designed into the amendment, Hunt was able to run again, and he “served” an additional eight years!
But finally, who can forget, just days prior to his resuming his tenure as Governor? That’s when he sent letters to any and all Republican appointees under the eight-year Martin administration… that they would lose their jobs effective January 1 to make way for HIS patronage hires. That “Christmas massacre” stands alone in NC politics as the most cruel act performed by any modern NC Governor. But Hunt got away with it, largely because of the friendly Democrat media. To this day, they always had his back.

Fair points. I'll admit my view on the man is a little rose-colored, since I was only 12 when he left office.
