I grew up in Cabarrus but have been living in Raleigh for about three years now. I'm noticing many similarities between the two areas, but I’m hoping the Triangle can learn from Charlotte and continue to grow. With all the up-and-coming cities around Raleigh, I think the region could really take the top spot in the state over the next few decades.
When I went to Atlanta a few weeks ago, you could tell how CLT just hasn't hit that adult stage, and like you say they may never do so. But as someone who proudly reps my home metro, I really hope Charlotte is able to keep improving until everyone knows its greatness! (or at least until they stop adding ", N.C," LOL!
Change Charlotte to United States and you could write the same article. And it's the liberals running media, movies, TV, K-12, Universities, foundations etc at both levels that are creating the situation.
Seems like we have this same conversation about every 20 years. I remember back in 1983-ish, having this conversation with the Harvey Gantt, our first mayor of color, who I ran into at a luncheon. (This was when you could still actually run into the mayor at a random spot around town🙄) .
The big topic of that day was where to put the Charlotte Coliseum. Many people wanted to put it downtown to try to wake downtown up, as it were. Excuse me, UPTOWN. That was supposed to invigorate and put Charlotte on the map.
But I think back on that because when considering Charlotte's trajectory, never underestimate the impact that George Shinn pulling the Hornets out of the city had. If not for the NFL and light rail we might still be In a spiral of doom.
I wonder what the conversation will center on 20 years from now.
