I’m not sure how they expected to energize the base with a candidate who only has name recognition among the chattering class-and among those, he’s not a favorite.
I really thought he could have used the Helene situation to burn Cooper but he didn’t do anything with his own title of ‘Helene czar.’
I’m frankly amazed that the team isn’t leading with the WNC failures. Two year anniversary is in 4 weeks and they should never stop hollering about the fact that Cooper was at a fundraiser with Dem elites while the waters were killing people.
But then, the NCGOP doesn’t have a killer instinct.
Thanks for this article and especially the useful RubberStampRoy.com. I wouldn't be pessimistic about Whatley's chances. The polls in August mean next to nothing. A lot is going to happen in the next two months which will change the dynamic, including the money coming in. I work with a group Promethean PAC which is adding another element. It's not just that Cooper would go along with the super liberal Democrat agenda. It's also the contrast to what Whatley would be supporting. What President Trump and his economic team are doing is smashing the entire globalist nightmare of outsourcing and green policies of the past many decades and instead rejuvenating an in-depth manufacturing economy in America. The full impact of this on job numbers, wage-levels, family life, etc., will not be felt for several years, but some effects are already visible, and the future is bright from such projects as Vulcan Elements in Johnston County, Johnson & Johnson in Holly Springs, and Corning Optical in Hickory. Promethean PAC intends to be very active to publicize this American System shift that is underway over the next two months.
(I can still hear Republican voters telling me they voted for Cooper in 2020 because he was doing everything he could to keep them safe. After all, Governor Roy got an hour or more of free media every day on WRAL, telling everyone just how hard we was working to protect them from COVID.)
Short of a miraculous turnaround, it appears the U.S. Senate race has already been decided. Whatley's game plan was to demonize Cooper and his record. But most North Carolinians were never going to buy into that ploy. Instead of marketing his program and policy ideas as part of the campaign, Whatley has chosen the attack strategy. As a result, former Governor Cooper is the candidate who has an extensive record on economic programs, statewide policies, and legislative collaboration. Whatley is viewed merely as a pro-Trump attack dog with no substantive ideas for improving life in North Carolina.
Many public opinion polls seem to reflect a grim reality- that the top of the GOP ticket is failing. The question that remains is, how will the GOP salvage other critically important races when Cooper's coattails create down-ballot lift for his party's candidates. Will the NCGOP do something - ANYTHING - to counter democrat momentum? Time is short. The first (UOCAVA) ballots are mailed in out in just a few weeks. Early voting begins mid-October.
Those of us leading local GOP organizations will have to work even harder than normal to secure votes for our conservative candidates. We aren't getting any messaging or branding support from the RNC or NCGOP, so it's imperative for us to be resourceful and diligent in promoting our conservative candidates if we are to achieve success in local and regional races.
I had two visitors to my front door within 2 hours a few weeks ago.
First visitor (young handsome white guy) was “Pro-Life for Whatley”, with a printed ad with a picture of a fetus.
I think this is a terrible campaign strategy, especially in Charlotte, but I am from the northeast and actually okay with NC’s abortion laws.
Second visitor(young, overweight, masculine looking female) Cooper for “Healthcare Freedom” - the new buzz words that could mean anything about healthcare, but if you read the ad, was about healthcare choices and reproductive rights (popular in Charlotte).
I have to say, if Whatley and the GOP has been running attack ads on Cooper for months, I'd have to ask where, because I saw the very first ad, where the father of the victim of one of Cooper's early release criminals poignantly pleaded for justice, just within the last week. They needed to run multiple ads like this, starting when Cooper declared, but they waited until he got to 50% in the polls.
Dan Forrest ignored COVID, and just ran the same ad on inflation, early and late, over and over again, and acted surprised when it wasn't enough to dethrone King Roy.
The NC GOP needs to understand, it CANNOT DEPEND ON THE PRESS TO DO ITS JOB, and go Spencer Pratt on these people. But they never do.
Refusing to release the Epstein files, whatever the content of them, told me he both doesn’t respect me and he doesn’t trust me to assess them correctly.
I have to vote for someone but I can’t vote for people who don’t trust me.
The Epstein files issue is about accountability and about transparency.

Sigh.

Another insightful article, Andrew.

You've summed things up well.
