Winning isn't always the point

In the bluest seat in North Carolina, a Republican is running anyway — and he’s betting the real fight is about money, housing, and first principles.

Most political coverage chases close races. I get it.

But on today’s Longleaf Politics Podcast, I did the opposite. I sat down with Jack Codiga, a Republican running in NC’s 12th Congressional District — arguably the safest Democratic seat in the state, centered on metro Charlotte. It’s also, sadly, the district I live in.

Here are the toplines:

  • Jack isn’t running like this is a standard “flip the seat” project. He flat-out says winning can’t be the ultimate goal.

  • He wants a campaign built around principles first — including a consciously Christian moral frame.

  • He’s making monetary policy the centerpiece, tying it directly to housing affordability in Charlotte.

The first thing I respected is that Jack doesn’t pretend the district is something it’s not. He knows the history. He knows the math. He still thinks it matters to show up.
